November Newsletter 2022:

This past week we met with Sarah Hamilton from Marion Soil and Water Conservation District. Sarah is a native and invasive plant specialist, she walked our farm inspiring and guiding us on how to replant the 85 trees that subsumed to the ice storm February 2020. We have been busy removing the dead trees and acres of blackberry vines. One interesting point she made was that the Ash trees that we still have standing will be gone in the very near future due to climate change from the Emerald Ash Borer. We need to focus on trees that will thrive and survive in the changes that we are starting to experience.

On a side note, I have the pleasure of serving on the Marion Water and Soil Board whose mission is to protect, conserve, and improve the quality of soil and water through planning, technical and financial assistance and education. Exciting times for us to be able to utilize Sarah’s expertise.

It’s November and that means Voting time! If you are like me, you have Election exhaustion. We have to take control and we have to vote. In order to save our food systems, keep our water supply pure and  to support our local farmers, we have to vote. Supporting our farmers is easy to do when you shop farmers markets and get involved with CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture). It’s also important to show up for your towns proposed developments that are creeping onto Ag land. Your dollar is the best way to vote.

Regenerative Agriculture.

We have discussed this much over the last few months. Talking with people about their experiences and making decisions about the health of our farmland. We made a video with Rosie and Ward Burroughs and they shared their knowledge with us. They have the first Certified Regenerative Ag Almond farm.  Regenerative Ag is defined by restoring, renewing and revitalizing our land. For the last few years here at Whole Circle Farms we have been working hard to incorporate regenerative practices.

We have finished harvest and our field is now ready for a winters rest. We have applied nutrients from a local dairy as well as a diverse cover crop.
